A frequent topic of conversation when I’m at a social gathering is “What’s the market like at the moment”. The answer of course is always different – our market is dynamic – always changing, because there are so many different influences acting on it.
While the changes are easily noticed, sometimes the influences are less readily apparent until afterwards.
Looking at our own company’s sales over the last few months, we are seeing record monthly sales volumes, and this month has seen the highest volume in 10 years. In this case the reasons are readily apparent – we are at record highs for net inflow migration.
In the last boom of 2003 net inflow migration was 42,000. This year to date is anticipated to hit 60,000 if it hasn’t already done so.
While not all those people are coming to Nelson, there is a flow on effect from the cities they do settle in, when those home owners sell up and move here.
